Fruit of the Loom makes $101,000 gift to American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society recognizes Fruit of the Loom Inc., based in Bowling Green, for its recent donation to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. On Wednesday, September 4, the company provided the society a $101,401 gift to support the organization’s mission to save lives and create more birthdays by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures and by fighting back against cancer.

“The money given by Fruit of the Loom will help the American Cancer Society fight for every birthday threatened by cancer in every community,” said Ayron Corbitt, American Cancer Society Kentucky state vice president.  “We are grateful for such a wonderful community partner that cares about eliminating this disease as much as we do.”

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising initiative with over 5,200 events taking place annually across the nation. Fruit of the Loom is gearing up to be a National Corporate Team Partner and they are a top performing fundraising team in the Society’s Mid-South Division. The recent donation was Fruit of the Loom’s corporate investment to Relay For Life, however, employees at all levels of the company get involved with the cause by volunteering with local events and partnering with the Society’s CEOs Against Cancer Kentucky Chapter.

“Fighting cancer is everyone’s business,” said Rick Medlin, Fruit of the Loom’s president and chief executive officer. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to support the American Cancer Society in making a difference in this fight on various fronts. I am proud of our commitment to this cause, and I look forward to our continued relationship with the American Cancer Society Relay For Life as well as the CEOs Against Cancer Kentucky Chapter.”

In May 2013, the American Cancer Society kicked off its Kentucky Chapter of the CEOs Against Cancer program, a collaborative partnership aimed at helping to improve the health of employees and communities. Fruit of the Loom’s Rick Medlin was among the founding co-chairs of the Society’s Kentucky Chapter.

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; and by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery.  As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.8 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
