HMH adds well-known physician to HMH Cancer Care Team

Dr. William Porter, M.D.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – Hardin Memorial Health announced today that Dr. William Porter, M.D. will join the HMH Cancer Care Team. Porter, the first radiation oncologist employed by the HMH Medical Group, is highly regarded for his expertise and leadership, having served as medical director and radiation oncologist at two Southern Indiana hospitals.

Following his undergraduate work, the Louisville native earned a master’s degree in public health from the University of Kentucky and graduated from the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati along with a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Working with Dr. Richard Seither, M.D., a beloved radiation oncologist who has cared for HMH patients for 24 years, Porter will help HMH meet the rapidly growing demand for cancer care.

“Dr. Porter brings incredible experience to HMH’s successful radiation therapy program,” said Dr. Tom Hustead, M.D., medical director of HMH Medical Group. “The addition of Dr. Porter as well as investments in equipment and technology means we continue to provide Central Kentucky patients with many of the services found in a metropolitan cancer center. “

A series of recent investments ensure cancer patients receive the same high-quality treatment at HMH that they would at any major metropolitan healthcare system. This includes the approval of a $3 million expenditure for a linear accelerator used in radiation therapy. In addition, HMH is an affiliate and research member of the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center  Network — Kentucky’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated center.

Plus, generous community support through the HMH Foundation allows HMH to provide the latest technology, PaxmanÒScalp Cooling System, to minimize hair loss during chemotherapy, and is creating a new cancer resource center where cancer patients and their families can find information, support and items they may need.

“I’m excited to join HMH and help grow such a strong program,” said Porter. “It’s rare for a community this size to have such a comprehensive cancer care center and a multi-disciplinary breast and lung program. Although fast growing, HMH treats patients like family and the fact that HMH is an affiliate of the renowned UK Markey Cancer Center means my patients will have access to the latest trials.”
