Whitehaven Welcome Center recognized as state’s best maintained rest area of 2014

Restored 1860s Southern mansion shines in annual competition

PADUCAH, Ky. (June 2, 2015) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) today named the Whitehaven welcome center along Interstate 24 in McCracken County the commonwealth’s best-maintained rest area of 2014.

whitehaven-welcome-centerCertificates were presented today to employees of T&T Cleaning Service, of Boston, Ky. T&T Cleaning Service provides janitorial services for the McCracken County facility along with Kentucky rest areas in Bullitt, Carter and Oldham counties. KYTC Department of Highways District 1 maintenance staff is responsible for landscape maintenance. KYTC Division of Maintenance oversees the operation.

The award is based on regular maintenance inspections and is presented annually by the cabinet. Whitehaven has received this distinction twice in the past five years.

The facility is centered around—and bears the name of —a restored mansion that features memorabilia of Alben W. Barkley, a McCracken County native who was majority leader of the U.S. Senate and was vice president of the United States from 1949 to 1952.

The Cabinet operates seven welcome centers, 16 rest areas and four truck rest havens at weigh station locations. This year marks the 16th annual award ceremony.
