Lafayette High School Wind Symphony receives national honor

Only school in nation awarded The Sudler Flag of Honor

sudlerLEXINGTON, Ky. (June 23, 2015) — Lafayette High School’s Wind Symphony has been awarded The Sudler Flag of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation — an honor reserved for the very best concert bands in the U.S.

The application process requires a minimum of seven years of extensive documentation, recordings, and letters of recommendation, high standards of excellence in adjudicated performances and statewide events and outstanding professional commitment by the conductor.

Led by director Chuck Smith, the Lafayette wind symphony was the only band program in the country to earn the award this year. They received a 4×6-foot nylon flag executed in red, white and blue and trimmed with gold fringe; it was presented in May during a concert at the Singletary Center. Smith also got an engraved plaque, and each band member an individualized diploma.
