FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 19, 2014) — Visitors to the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville from Aug. 20-30 can get updated information about Gov. Steve Beshear’s health initiatives and details about the state’s health benefit exchange at the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) exhibit.
The fair will feature information to help support the strategies of Beshear’s kyhealthnow initiative, which prioritizes the well-being of Kentucky’s citizens and sets seven major health goals for all Kentuckians.
“Since kyhealthnow’s launch, more Kentuckians have health insurance, enjoy smoke-free workplaces and have access to care for heart disease,” CHFS Secretary Audrey Tayse Haynes said. “In this spirit, CHFS staff at the state fair will encourage individuals to take meaningful steps toward improving their health with the help of our programs.”
She said, “Lifestyle modifications can contribute to chronic disease prevention, savings in health costs, and ultimately, a longer life. Every day, our exhibit will offer new information about how to ensure a healthier lifestyle by making good decisions about nutrition, daily activity and behavioral health. Sometimes it’s not easy, but many of our programs offer families help toward better well-being.”
On weekends at the fair, the CHFS exhibit will feature staff and information from the Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CCSHCN), the CHFS agency that helps qualifying families find care for children who have health conditions, including spina bifida, epilepsy and other seizure disorders, orthopedic conditions, heart, vision and hearing conditions. The commission also offers speech, physical and occupational therapy services.
“A lot of Kentucky families don’t even know that they qualify for our services and can benefit from them, but we hope our time at the state fair can change that,” said CCSHCN Executive Director Jackie Richardson. “We can help families of exceptional kids with special needs find medical care that will enhance a lifetime of wellness.”
CCSHCN serves Kentucky children with physical disabilities from birth to age 21 through on-site and off-site clinics, therapies and related services.
The CHFS state fair exhibit will also include experts who can answer questions about the state’s health benefit exchange, kynect—Kentucky’s Healthcare Connection. kynect, a key element of the federal Affordable Care Act, was launched in 2013.
The interactive display, which will be located in the Health Horizons section of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center’s South Wing B, will feature learning activities for children and adults, free screenings and on-site health educators who can speak one-to-one about wellness and prevention.
