Kentucky adventure tourism opportunities ramping up this spring

Lighthouse Landing at Kentucky Lake

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 9, 2012) – Spring is a great time to be outdoors in Kentucky, especially if you’re looking for adventure.

During May and June, there are many outdoor events for families across the state, according to the Kentucky Office of Adventure Tourism.

“With the warmer temperatures, there’s no better time to get outside to enjoy the scenery and natural beauty across Kentucky,” said First Lady Jane Beshear. “I encourage everyone to get outside and take advantage of the great opportunities we have in the Bluegrass State.”

Here are some examples of the exciting events scheduled during May and June. For these and other events, visit www.getoutky.com.

• “Occupy Beech Fork,” hosted by the Bardstown Boaters, is the annual river cleanup in and around Bardstown. This year the event will take place May 12, but there will be free camping on Friday, May 11, on the lawn of Spalding Hall. This year marks the eighth year of the river cleanup. The event is open to the public. For more information, visit www.bardstownboaters.com

• The following weekend, May 18-20, Olive Hill will host its first trail ride for the new Olive Hill Heritage Trail.  There will be rides that leave each day at 11 a.m., and free camping for riders and their horses will be available in downtown Olive Hill. For more information call 1-606-286-5532

• Ever wanted to try sailing? Well, you’re in luck May 17-20 when Lighthouse Landing at Kentucky Lake will hold its most popular learning course. Practical Sailing School is a four-day course that introduces participants to the fun of sailing. For more information, visit www.lighthouselanding.com

• The first weekend in June is a popular weekend in Kentucky for two reasons – National Trails Day on June 2, and Free Fishing Weekend to promote National Fishing Week. (No fishing license is required June 1-2.) Kentucky is also gearing up with great National Trails Day events. Visit www.americanhiking.org for a listing of events.
