Online voting determines grand prize winner

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2015) — The Lexington Humane Society is one of eight national finalists for the HomeAgain Shelter of the Year Award, an online voting competition that will award the grand prize winner $25,000, along with a new computer, a new iPad, a suite of Merck Animal Health products (total package value $30,000) and a special on-site event to celebrate its win.

UnknownFour runner-ups will receive $2,500, a new computer, a new iPad and a suite of Merck Animal Health products (total value over $9,000). The remaining finalists will receive a HomeAgain Universal WorldScan Reader. Voting results will be announced on Nov. 3, the start of National Shelter Appreciation Week.

In the past year, the Lexington Humane Society has adopted more than 4,700 pets. It also partnered with smaller shelters to rescue over 1,300 animals from high-risk or crisis situations, performed 7,200 spay/neuter surgeries and reunited nearly 1,000 lost animals with their owners.

The Lexington Humane Society:

  • Operates Spay’sTheWay, a free and low-cost spay/neuter program
  • Manages multiple programs including food assistance, rabies vaccination clinics, Project Purrfect, Canine Companions and First Contact
  • Coordinates in-house program that gives specialized training to pit bull breeds
  • Secured an emergency animal housing trailer, supply trailer and supplies to aid in disaster relief through a partnership with local Emergency Management

If it wins the competition the Lexington Humane Society plans to use the money to find ways to increase adoptions, by enhancing the adoption experience, importing more high-risk animals from smaller shelters—increasing the number of lives saved and the number of altered, microchipped animals entering the community—and for promotional activities to continue spreading the adoption message.

Other finalists are from Des Moines, Iowa, West Palm Beach, Fla., Indianapolis, Lemoore, Calif., Silverdale, Wash., Ocean City, N.J. and Bloomington, Ill.
