Humana ahead of schedule on veterans-hiring commitment

Company has hired more than 400 veterans and/or spouses as part of Obama’s veterans-hiring challenge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 29, 2012) — Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) is making significant progress on its pledge to hire 1,000 military veterans and/or their spouses over a three-year period.

In August 2011, Humana chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mike McCallister joined President Obama for a event which launched the president’s nationwide veterans-hiring challenge. Humana’s pledge, part of its national Veterans Initiative, was made at the event.

Less than one year later, Humana has hired 410 veterans and/or their spouses — in addition to the veterans and veteran spouses already working at Humana.

“Our associates have been hard at work fulfilling our commitment and it shows in the results,” McCallister said. “We are honored that many of America’s service men and women are choosing to begin or continue their professional careers with Humana after returning to civilian life.”

Beyond the veteran-hiring component of the national Humana Veterans Initiative, Humana is also donating $1 million to the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities, a national program that offers cutting-edge training in entrepreneurship and small-business management at no cost to post-9/11 veterans. The program was founded in 2007 at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University.

Earlier this year, Humana also introduced a new suite of health-plan and financial-protection products – many of which have been created specifically for veterans and their families.

The national Humana Veterans Initiative is an outgrowth of Humana’s long-standing relationship with the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Humana is the health-benefits administrator for more than three million active duty and retired military personnel and their families under the DoD’s TRICARE program. Additionally, Humana is partnering with the VA on two demonstration projects that are focused on improving veterans’ access to health care. Also, Humana was recently inducted into the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) and joins Humana Military Healthcare Services in that initiative.
