PSC approves Kentucky Power’s request to withdraw plant upgrade proposal

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 1, 2012) — The Kentucky Public Service Commission on Thursday approved Kentucky Power’s request to withdraw its plan to upgrade a coal-burning power plant in Lawrence County.

Kentucky Power asked Wednesday to withdraw its request for approval of an environmental compliance plan that included construction of a $940 million flue gas desulfurization unit and associated facilities at its Big Sandy generating station near Louisa.

A spokesperson for the utility said Kentucky Power pulled the plan —which had drawn criticism from environmental groups, the state attorney general’s office and large industrial customers — because of the changing “energy landscape.”
