Conference focuses on college going for students of diverse backgrounds

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 15, 2012) — The Council on Postsecondary Education and the Kentucky Department of Education will co-sponsor the 25th Annual Academically Proficient High School Junior and Senior Diversity Conference this Friday and Saturday, June 15 -16, on the campus of Western Kentucky University.

An estimated 120 academically proficient students and parents will attend the conference, which promotes successful transitions to college among students of diverse backgrounds.

Dr. Erica Sutton, a surgeon at the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine, will be the keynote speaker on Saturday morning. Michael Coleman, school recruiter for Warren County Public Schools, will be the featured speaker in the parent session.

Conference sessions over the two days will highlight a wide range of college planning topics, including financial aid and scholarships, college and career selection, and skills for successful transition to college.

A college fair will follow the sessions with campus representatives on hand to answer student questions.
