SHELBIANA, Ky. (June 15, 2012) — The 16th annual Shelby Railroad Homecoming Reunion will take place on June 30 on the grounds of the beautiful Grace Baptist Church at Shelbiana, on a hill overlooking the Shelby Railroad yard.
Registration, which is free for all attendees, will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the opening ceremony will take place inside the church at 10:45 a.m. The ceremony will be open to the public, attendees are just asked to bring a dish. The meal and drinks will be provided during the reunion. Any family with someone connected to the railroad or Shelbiana is welcome to attend.
The reunion is sponsored by the Shelby Railroad board and is a Pike County Tourism event. Everyone who registers will be eligible to win two tickets on Amtrak’s New River Train Excursion, which leaves from Huntington and goes to Hinton, W.V., and is valued at around $450. The trip is sponsored by the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Society and will take place in October of this year.
Inductees chosen by the board for the Shelby Railroad Hall of Fame for 2012 are Jerry Slone and Frank Johnson. Inductees are chosen based on their contribution to the railroad, their family and outstanding contributions to their community.
The Joyce Charles Clark Scholarship winners will also be announced and presented at the reunion. The scholarships are made possible by William Lee Clark Enterprises and the reunion committee. To be considered for the Joyce Charles Clark Scholarship, one must be a high school senior, have a family connection to the C&O-Chessie system or CSX and have applied through their counselor at their high school. Virgil Osborne and the committee will make the announcement.
Attendees can bring their old pictures to display and railroad, religious and Bluegrass music will be provided by Blackberry Jam and Dr. Terry Comer, who wrote the love ballad “Shelbiana.”
Anyone interested in taking part in the final planning of the event can come to the committee’s final meeting, at noon Monday, June 25, at the Grace Baptist Church.
