Secretary of State’s grandmother, star of her TV commercials, dies

Thelma Lundergan McHugh, 92, passed away June 21.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 22, 2012) — The grandmother of Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, who became a star last year during Grimes’ campaign for the office, died Thursday.

Grimes said her paternal grandmother, Thelma Lundergan McHugh, 92, passed away peacefully in her home in Jessamine County, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and loved ones.

“My grandmother instilled in me the confidence that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to and taught me by example the importance of being involved in my community,” Grimes said.

In 2011, McHugh filmed commercials and encouraged citizens to vote alongside Grimes’ maternal grandmother, Elsie Case.

“My grandmother didn’t just talk the talk, she walked the walk,” Grimes said. “She worked in the Mason County Sheriff’s Office for over 20 years, and she stood by my side from the moment I filed to run for public office through my swearing-in and first six months as Secretary of State. I would not be where I am today without her love, influence and support.”

Grimes said she hopes to honor her grandmother’s memory by “continuing her legacy of service and hard work.”

Arrangements for McHugh’s visitation and funeral are pending.
