Grants available for waste tire program

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 28, 2012) – Kentucky counties are encouraged to apply for up to $3,000 each in waste tire removal and recycling grants. The money is being made available through the Department for Environmental Protection’s Division of Waste Management (DWM) Waste Tire Trust Fund.

“Eligible expenses under this grant are the actual costs, up to $3,000, that the county incurs during the grant period for disposal or recycling of waste tires,” said Chris Fitzpatrick, manager of the Recycling and Local Assistance Branch within DWM. “Other expenses, such as labor, equipment costs, and charges by independent haulers are not eligible.”

The grant period is July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013. Costs incurred by the county after July 1, 2012, but before submitting a signed Waste Tire Grant agreement, are eligible as long as they were for the disposal or recycling of waste tires and the county submits receipts for those costs when it sends in its final report form by July 15, 2013.

There are no matching dollars required to obtain the grant, but counties must submit grant applications no later than Aug. 1, 2012, to be eligible. Counties will have until July 15, 2013, to submit the proper report and receipts from expenditures in order to account for the grant money. Any unused funds will be returned to the Kentucky State Treasurer.

Grant packets are being sent to all county judge/executives.
