Youth bands gearing up for state fair Battle of the Bands prelims July 14

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 3, 2012) — Twenty-four bands from across Kentucky and Indiana are slated to compete in the preliminary competition of the Kentucky State Fair Battle of the Bands on Saturday, July 14 at Mom’s Music in Louisville. The contest begins at 11 a.m. and continues until approximately 3 p.m. Mom’s Music is located at 1900 Mellwood Avenue.

Each band will perform one song before a panel of music industry judges, who will determine the 15 bands to advance to the Battle of the Bands Finals at the Fair on Aug. 18. The BotB Finals are the most anticipated event in the Farm Credit YAP Tent on the Thrillway at the Kentucky State Fair. Farm Credit Mid-America sponsors the Fair’s venue for youth music.

Bands competing in the preliminary round of the contest will receive immediate feedback from judges who have successful and diverse careers in music. Judges include Hank Linderman, the California-based engineer and producer of legendary bands including The Eagles, America, The Beach Boys and Chicago. An accomplished guitarist, Linderman just completed a tour with Timothy B. Schmit, bassist for Poco and The Eagles.

A member from one of the area’s hottest bands, The Pass, also will judge the contest. The band will, no doubt, see who draws the longest straw for the honor on July 14, right before they head out on their latest tour. The Pass’ debut album was released on sonaBLAST! Records, and their synth-pop/dance floor psychedelia songs have been featured on the hit television shows “Vampire Diaries” and “Raising Hope.”

The Battle of the Bands revives a decades-old tradition at the Kentucky State Fair, to showcase young adult bands. The modern reincarnation of the contest was launched in 2010, with The Dirty Grindstones from Somerset, Ky., winning the first year, and Identity Crisis, from Floyds Knobs, Ind., taking home the championship guitar in 2011.

To qualify for the battle, at least half of the band members must be between the ages of 14 and 20, and no band member may be older than 24. The winning band earns a session in the studios of Jetlag Recordings.
