FRANKFORT, Ky. (Mar. 16, 2018) — Gregory K. Johnson, commissioner of Kentucky’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, announced his retirement today at the Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting after nearly four decades of public service in natural resources, wildlife management, and agriculture.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to have led Kentucky’s outdoor community with a sportsmen-centric philosophy and look forward to a new season with my family,” said Johnson.
Jimmy Bevins, chairman of the Fish and Wildlife Commission, and Don Parkinson, secretary of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, thanked Johnson for his service.
“We appreciate Commissioner Johnson’s dedication to the agency over the last four years,” said Bevins.
“I’m grateful for the service of Commissioner Johnson and wish him well in the next chapter of his life,” said Parkinson.
Highlights of Johnson’s tenure include improving waterfowl wildlife management areas in Western Kentucky, supporting the population growth of grouse in Eastern Kentucky, and promoting conservation as a critical part of outdoor youth education.
Frank Jemley, who serves as chief of staff for the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, has been named interim commissioner by Secretary Don Parkinson until a new commissioner is appointed by the Fish and Wildlife Commission.
The Fish and Wildlife Commission has established a search committee that will evaluate qualified candidates.
