Design phase approved for outpatient UK HealthCare building at Hamburg property

The Hamburg area of Lexington along I-75 where UK HealthCare plans an outpatient campus.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A plan to begin the design phase for the construction of an outpatient UK HealthCare medical building on land recently approved to be acquired in the Hamburg area on the east side of Lexington was approved Thursday by the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees Health Care Committee. It is pending approval by the Board of Trustees on Friday.

The $30 million approved for the project will initiate the design phase that will include detailed programming services, schematic design through construction documentation phases and budget estimates for all phases with projected timelines. The new outpatient medical facility will be the first phase of a potential multi-phased project at this new campus.

UK HealthCare identified a location in the Hamburg area of Lexington to expand its facilities last year and the UK Board of Trustees approved the acquisitions of a total of 41 acres at its June 17, 2022, and Feb. 17, 2023, meetings.

“A key strategic imperative for our university and our academic health system is to take care of our people. The area in and around Hamburg – specifically, the 40509 zip code – has the largest concentration of UK employees in the county. It is also one of the fastest growing areas in the region,” said UK President Eli Capilouto. “Our mission is to advance Kentucky in everything that we do and a healthier state where more people have greater access to quality patient care, closer to their home is a critical part of that mission.”

Additional Board of Trustees approval will be required to initiate the construction phase.

In addition to this approval, the Board endorsed plans to continue to establish new smaller ambulatory sites, specifically to serve UK’s families closer to their homes as well as to address critical needs for medically underserved populations in Fayette County.

UK HealthCare currently offers outpatient services at several other medical facilities across Lexington, including Kentucky Children’s Hospital’s pediatric clinics, the Good Samaritan Professional Arts Center, UK HealthCare-Turfland, the Lexington Surgery Center, Kentucky Clinic South, Polk-Dalton Clinic, the UK HealthCare offices at Fountain Court, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.
