Daily blasting begins on I-71 near Gene Snyder Freeway

Rolling closures planned on I-71 over coming weeks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is advising motorists and residents of potential traffic impacts over the next few weeks on I-71 near the I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) interchange as part of the I-Move Kentucky project.

Crews excavating near the interchange will perform daily blasting to widen the corridor and add a collector-distributor lane on I-71 southbound. The new lane will improve safety for vehicles entering and exiting I-71 southbound at the I-265 interchange.

Blasting is underway along I-71 southbound at mile point 8.7, just south of the Springdale Road overpass. This work may continue daily, including some weekends, over the next few weeks. Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather.

For the safety of the traveling public, rolling closures and occasional stoppages will occur on I-71 during blasting. These rolling closures are scheduled to occur once daily, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Traffic on I-71 will be slowed or stopped at the following points prior to the blasts near the highway:

  • I-71 southbound, starting at the Oldham Co. rest area, mile point 13
  • I-71 northbound, starting at the I-264 (Watterson Expressway) interchange, mile point 5.1
  • I-265 ramps to I-71 southbound, at mile point 9.1
