Media predicts UK men’s basketball team to win 2013 SEC title; scrimmage Wednesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Oct. 23, 2012) — The University of Kentucky men’s basketball team was picked by the media to win its 46th Southeastern Conference championship this season as announced by the league office on Monday.

Each SEC school selected media members that cover its team and additional media from across the nation were selected by the conference office to form the voting panel.

Kentucky, who is coming off a 38-2 season, went 16-0 in the SEC en route to winning an eighth national championship, earned 17 first-place votes.

The Wildcats received 328 total points (17 first-place votes), ahead of second-place Florida’s 310 points (five first-place votes). Missouri (286 points) and Tennessee (269 points) were the other schools to receive first place votes.

UK freshman Nerlens Noel was selected as a preseason All-SEC first-team member, while freshman Alex Poythress was tabbed to the second-team.

Noel was one of seven players to earn votes for the preseason Player of the Year accolade. The Everett, Mass., native garnered three votes and finished behind Missouri junior Phil Pressey as the choice of the media for SEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year with six votes. Florida senior Kenny Boynton finished second (five votes) while Noel joined Arkansas’ BJ Young and Tennessee’s Jarnell Stokes with three votes each.

The Wildcats will return to the floor on Wednesday with the annual Blue/White Scrimmage in Rupp Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will air live on Fox Sports South and the UK IMG Network. Tickets are available online through Ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000. Tickets will also be sold in person at the UK Ticket Office between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by calling 1-800-928-2287. Fans can also obtain tickets by calling or in-person at the Rupp Arena Box Office or visiting statewide Ticketmaster outlets.

At the conclusion of the scrimmage, fans in attendance will be treated to a special viewing of the first and second episodes of ESPN’s All-Access Kentucky series inside Rupp Arena.

The cost of the tickets is $10 (lower level) and $5 (upper level). All seating is reserved and no general admission eRUPPtion Zone tickets will be available.
