Williamsburg, Ky. – Dr. Larry L. Cockrum was officially confirmed as the 10th president of University of the Cumberlands on Oct. 15, following unanimous agreement by the Board of Trustees. Over the past year, Cockrum served as CEO and President-elect, overseeing all operational aspects of the institution.

“In this past year as acting President, Larry has proven to be a very capable leader while setting an example with his Christian faith and work ethic,” said Jon Westbrook, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “His style of leadership is proactive with measureable results yet his personality is humble and open to considering the opinions of others.”

Cockrum joined the Cumberlands family in 2005. Prior to the presidency, he served as Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2007- 2014. Under his leadership, enrollment grew from 1,728 students to just over 6,100 students this fall. The university’s rapid growth is largely attributed to Cockrum’s vision for expanding the university’s affordably priced online degree programs.

“In our journey from 1888 to today, Cumberlands has continually adapted to new technologies and the ever-changing world in which we live,” said President Cockrum. “Our methods of delivery may have changed over the years but our mission remains the same. We believe an education should provide a variety of learning opportunities for students, both inside and outside the classroom. We emphasize not only academics, but also student work and service, with the end goal of developing well-rounded, educated individuals.”

Cockrum, who received a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from Vanderbilt University and a Post-Graduate certification from Harvard University, succeeds long-time President, Dr. James H. Taylor.

“I view this position as an honor and a privilege,” Cockrum added. “It is a pleasure to work at an institution where the vision is to be a premier liberal arts university that encourages intellectual and spiritual growth, coupled with leadership and service.”
