HENDERSON, Ky. (April 30, 2018)—Labor Cabinet Deputy Secretary Mike Nemes visited Teknor Color Company in Henderson today to present a Governor’s Safety and Health Award for the 282,994 production hours worked without a lost-time incident by employees.

“Congratulations to Teknor Color Company in Henderson on earning its first Governor’s Safety and Health Award,” said Labor Secretary Derrick Ramsey. “Working over 280,000 hours without a lost-time injury shows Teknor’s dedication to workplace safety for each of its employees. On behalf of Governor Bevin, it is my honor to congratulate you on this award in recognition of all the hard work that has made this achievement possible.”

Teknor Color Company, a division of Pawtucket, RI-based Teknor Apex Company, manufacturers a full line of custom and standard colors, as well as, additives and special effects for the plastics industry. The Henderson facility has been manufacturing colorant products for over 40 years. Currently, Teknor Color Company has 46 employees at its Henderson facility.

“The measures that Teknor Color Company has taken to ensure the safety and well-being of their employees has not gone unnoticed,” Sen. Dorsey Ridley (Henderson) said. “This much-deserved award for 282,994 consecutive hours without a lost time injury or illness is a tribute to the value they put on their workforce. Henderson is fortunate to have Teknor as a corporate partner and we look forward to many such successes in the future.”

“Teknor Color is a company that takes both pride in its great products and workers alike,” Rep. Robby Mills (Henderson) said. “I can’t express how proud I am that a local company was able to get this highly coveted state award.”

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet presents the Governor’s Safety and Health Award to highlight outstanding safety and health performance in Kentucky’s workplaces. A business may qualify for the award if its employees achieve a required number of hours worked without experiencing a lost-time injury or illness. The required number of hours is dependent upon the number of employees.

According to a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Kentucky employers reported the lowest incident rate for nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses in the state’s history.

Based on a mathematical calculation that describes the number of recordable incidents per 100 full-time employees, Kentucky’s incident rate improved from 3.7 in 2015 to 3.4 in 2016. This rate has steadily declined since it was first calculated in 1996, when a rate of 8.4 was reported.

Along with the Kentucky Safety and Health Network, the Division of Occupational Safety & Health Education & Training also co-hosts the Governor’s Safety and Health Conference and Exposition each year. The 34th annual conference will take place next month at the Sloan Convention Center in Bowling Green from May 8-11, 2018. For more info and to register for the conference, please visit kshn.net.
