Midway announces additional athletic programs for 2019-20

MIDWAY, Ky. — Midway University announced Friday that it will add additional athletic programs for students entering for the 2019-20 academic year. Men’s and women’s bowling as well as men’s track and field were recently approved by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees with recruitment to begin immediately.

“Midway Athletics is excited to add these sports to our line-up” said Rusty Kennedy, VP of Admissions and Athletics. “Bowling is a popular sport in Kentucky as a KHSAA sponsored sport with lots of interest. In addition, a number of our peer institutions sponsor bowling teams, so we felt it was a good fit for our program.”

As for the addition of men’s track and field, Kennedy said, “Since we already field a men’s cross country team and have women’s track and field, we felt like men’s track and field was a natural addition to our program.”

“Providing additional opportunities for student-athletes is important to us,” said Dr. John P. Marsden, president, Midway University. “We believe a vibrant athletics program enhances our institution and provides a wonderful opportunity for students to earn their degree while playing a sport they love. Our athletes continue to show results on the field and in the classroom. Athletes had an overall GPA of 3.16 for the spring 2018 semester, and for the second year in a row, Midway athletics received the Gold Level Champions of Character Five-Star Institution honor from the NAIA, an honor that highlight’s our dedication to pursuing character-driven athletics.”

“Each of these new sports will offer athletic scholarships,” added Kennedy. “Our recruitment efforts have already begun, and we will be adding coaching staff soon. For any students interested in Midway athletics we ask that they contact us and complete a recruitment form on our athletics website.”

Midway University competes in the River States and Mid-South Conferences and is a member of the NAIA. This year Midway University has more than 400 student-athletes participating in 20 sports. With the additional sports, Midway athletics will offer opportunities in 23 sports.
