The House Education Committee passed Senate Bill 1, school safety legislation, Wednesday moving the bill to the full House.
The legislation was presented by House Majority Leader Bam Carney and Senate Bill 1 sponsor Sen. Max Wise who noted the components of the legislation are the result of the work of the legislature’s School Safety Working Group, which met over the last year.
The bill sets to establish safer learning environments in Kentucky’s schools by adding more school resource officers and mental health professionals in schools, requiring active shooter training for certain school employees, and requiring that districts appoint a school safety coordinator.
The school safety measure passed with a committee substitute which Sen. Wise explained changes some of the dates in the bill to allow for more time for compliance, encourages student involvement in the crafting of an emergency plan, includes new specifics about training school resource officers should undergo, encourages onsite visits by the school safety coordinator, and more.
Senate Bill 1 now moves to the full House for a vote on the floor.
