Project to improve Capital City Airport to begin soon

Federally funded project will shorten runway, increase safety area

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 19, 2012) A project to expand and improve the runway safety area at Capital City Airport in Frankfort will begin soon.

The project, which is 90 percent federally funded with a $1.6 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will involve removing 400 feet of runway and taxiway.

That will enlarge the runway safety area – the space between the end of the runway and heavily traveled U.S. 127, which borders one side of the airport. The FAA requires a safety area of at least 1,000 feet.

The new length of the runway will be 5,500 feet.

The project will also include pavement modifications to the runway, taxiway and aircraft run up area, lighting systems improvements and the installation of two windcones.
