Gov. Matt Bevin, left, and Attorney General Andy Beshear

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky voters turned out on Tuesday to vote in the 2019 primary election where Gov. Matt Bevin easily won the Republican primary and Attorney General Andy Beshear was victorious in a tight three-way race on the Democratic side.

Beshear won the Democratic primary with 37.8 percent of the vote and a total of 149,438 votes. Close behind was House Democratic Leader Rocky Adkins who pulled in 125,970 votes and 31.9% of the vote, followed by former state auditor Adam Edelen with 110,159 votes and 27.9% of the vote.

Turnout in the Republican primary was lower as Bevin received 136,060 votes which gave him the win at 52.3% of the vote. GOP state Rep. Robert Goforth got 101,343 votes and lesser known candidates William Woods and Ike Lawrence received a combined 8.64 percent of the vote.

Bevin’s re-election campaign with running mate Ralph Alvarado will likely be an intense race as he faces off against Beshear and running mate Jacqueline Coleman. Bevin and Beshear have often traded jabs and lawsuits throughout their terms in statewide elected office.

Another top race to watch on election night was the Republican race for attorney general where Louisville lawyer and former McConnell aide Daniel Cameron defeated state Senator Wil Schroder by just over 25,000 votes. Cameron will go on to face former House Speaker Greg Stumbo, a Democrat who held the office of attorney general from 2003-2007.

The race for secretary of state will see a contest between Democrat Heather French Henry, former Miss America who served as commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, and Republican Michael G. Adams, a GOP election lawyer from Louisville.

State auditor Mike Harmon saw no competition in the Republican primary and will face the winner of the three-way Democratic primary, Sherri Donahue, who served in Security and Intelligence for the U.S. Navy.

Republican incumbent Ryan Quarles won his primary election for his position asagriculture commissioner with 82 percent of the vote and will face Democrat Robert Haley Conway in the fall.

In the election for state treasurer, incumbent Republican Allison Ball had no primary challengers. Democrat Michael Bowman won his primary election and will be on the ballot in November.
