CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — ABB Labs, an optical lens fabrication lab, opened a new $7.5 million facility Wednesday in Erlanger, Ky.

ABB Labs is part of ABB Optical Group, a leading national provider of optical products, services and business solutions for the eye care industry.

The new 42,000-s.f. facility is replacing the company’s existing 8,000-s.f. facility located in Cincinnati, and will employ more than 60 people, with future plans to have approximately 200 staff members.

“The new ABB Labs facility has the capabilities and capacity to continue providing our customers with superior products and extraordinary service with a fast turnaround time, two things that ABB Labs is recognized for in the optical industry,” said Tom Burke, ABB Optical Group chief executive officer. “With time, our new lab in Erlanger will be able to produce between 2,500 and 3,000 lens fabrication jobs per day. We are excited for the future of ABB Labs and the important role we play in ensuring that eye care professionals have the products, services and solutions they need to help them deliver the best in eye care to their patients.”

Furlong Building provided the construction services for the renovation of the new Erlanger building. The $7.5 million project for the building includes laboratory, fabrication and distribution and office space. ATA Architects provided design services for the project.

“We welcome this new high-tech, healthcare company to the City of Erlanger and to Northern Kentucky,” said Furlong CEO Jude Hehman. “It is exciting to learn of the growth experienced by ABB and look forward to their continued success and to building a strong partnership for our region.”

The lab officially began operations in mid-November, with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony held on Nov. 20. The new facility is located at 4400 Olympic Boulevard, Unit 4530, in Erlanger.
