Applications now open for environmental ‘super citizens’

Citizens’ Environmental Academy offers a chance for residents to make a difference

Citizens’ Environmental Academy

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The City of Lexington is seeking environmental “super citizens.” Are you interested in learning the ins and outs of recycling? Want to know more about wastewater treatment? If you have burning questions about how to improve Lexington’s environment and are looking for the chance to make a difference, the Citizens’ Environmental Academy (CEA) might be just the thing for you. Applications are currently being accepted for the program’s fourth class.

The year-long program, presented by Lexington’s Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works, is designed to engage Fayette County residents in environmental issues related to the department’s work.

For the first half of the academy, participants meet one Saturday a month for talks, tours and hands-on activities. Session sites include the Lexington Recycle Center, Town Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Senior Center and McConnell Springs.

The program then shifts gears and participants carry out group projects related to what they’ve learned in the academy, developed in partnership with city staff. Each participant is allowed up to $2,000 to contribute toward their chosen project. Projects are selected by class vote and must be approved, along with a budget, by the city.

“My CEA experience was invaluable,” says current participant Eve Wallingford. “Not only did I learn more about the services and work Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government does, but I also met a diverse group of Lexington residents that have become friends. If you are interested in learning how to contribute more to our community’s sustainability, impact, and overall well-being, you should apply.”
