Humana selected to manage Medicaid coverage in 16-county Louisville region

Company partnering with CareSource to serve Medicaid recipients residing in Region 3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. & DAYTON, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and CareSource announced today  the Kentucky Cabinet of Health and Family Services has selected Humana to participate in its comprehensive managed Medicaid program in Region 3 – serving Medicaid recipients who reside in a 16-county region including Louisville, Ky., the state’s largest city. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Aged, Blind and Disabled (ABD) program enrollees (including individuals dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid) are covered under the state’s managed Medicaid program.

“Humana has a long history working with the Commonwealth of Kentucky, where our company is headquartered, and is honored to work with the Commonwealth to address the health needs of Medicaid recipients in the state”

CareSource, one of the most respected Medicaid companies in the country, will be working jointly with Humana – as part of their strategic alliance – to administer the related Medicaid benefits using the strength of Humana’s health care provider network in the state.

Approximately 175,000 eligible Medicaid recipients reside in the 16-county region for which Humana was selected. The 16 Kentucky counties are, in alphabetical order: Breckinridge, Bullitt, Carroll, Grayson, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Larue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble and Washington. In addition to Humana-CareSource, three other entities will also manage Medicaid coverage for recipients in the 16-county region.

“Humana has a long history working with the Commonwealth of Kentucky, where our company is headquartered, and is honored to work with the Commonwealth to address the health needs of Medicaid recipients in the state,” said Alan Wheatley, President, Medicare at Humana. Wheatley also leads the company’s Medicaid operations.

“As our partnership with Humana grows, we are excited about how our two organizations will work together to manage medical coverage for individuals who need it most,” said Pamela Morris, CareSource President and Chief Executive Officer.

The Humana-CareSource alliance was established earlier this year to enable the companies to work together to serve people with Medicare and Medicaid health coverage. Humana and CareSource are expected to bring their extensive experience in both programs to deliver innovative, full-service solutions to federal and state governments looking to enhance care coordination, improve quality and make the programs simpler to navigate. This care coordination is expected to result in better health outcomes for Humana and CareSource members.

Humana has more than 25 years of experience in Medicare and a deep knowledge of health issues in Kentucky. Many Kentucky Medicare beneficiaries are also eligible for Medicaid. CareSource, a community-based nonprofit health plan with more than 900,000 Medicaid members in Ohio, has 23 years of experience in providing access to care for Medicaid members.
