A multi-component Kentucky interstate project starts with a boom

Work has begun on the first 3 mi. of the I-265 widening.  A $180 million, multi-component Kentucky interstate project is expected to improve safety, relieve congestion in three heavily traveled freight corridors, and address several of the state’s most significant transportation needs when it is completed in 2023.

The four design-build I-Move Kentucky projects awarded to Hall Contracting of Kentucky Inc. are:

  • I-71/I-265 interchange improvements that will create a collector-distributor lane on southbound I-71 to improve safety and easy ramp movements to and from I-265;
  • I-265 widening to the center and adding one 12-ft. lane of traffic in each direction to create a total of six lanes between KY 155 and I-71;
  • I-71 widening to the center and adding one, 12-ft. lane in each direction to create a total of six lanes between I-265 and KY 329; and
  • I-64/1-265 – reconstructing the I-64/I-265 interchange to improve safety and ease of flow of traffic through the interchange.

The first of the projects got underway in May 2020. The interchange sees about 25,000 vehicles a day and was given priority due to safety concerns.
