West Irving Die has closed its automotive parts plants in Owensboro, Ky., and Sandwich, Ill., another casualty of the struggling automotive industry. The shutdowns mean the loss of 125 jobs in Owensboro and another 175 in Illinois. The company has operated in Owensboro since 1998.
Unilever Foods is investing $49 million to expand its facility in Owensboro. The expansion will add a production line and sauce pellet kitchen to the plant’s frozen food unit, which produces foods under the Bertolli line. The new line is expected to be operational by late 2009 and add nearly 80 new jobs. The company currently employs 445 at the Owensboro plant.
