There are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Understanding this disease and how it affects everyone, direct or indirectly, is the first step in increasing awareness and early detection.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women, second to lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, there is a 13% risk a woman will develop the cancer sometime in her life. Men can develop cancer also, with nearly 2,000 men being diagnosed each year.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UofL Health will light up facilities in pink the entire month of October.
“For over a year, COVID-19 has put a pause in a lot of patients’ lives, including missing routine breast screenings and care,” said Jason Chesney, M.D., director of the UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center. “Ensuring our patients that we will continue to provide compassionate, patient-centered care throughout the entirety of their journey is our number one goal. We want our patients and our community to see that they are supported.”
