Norton Healthcare selects architectural firm to design new West Louisville hospital

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Norton Healthcare has selected Moody Nolan, a leader in community-based health care, to design West Louisville’s first newly constructed hospital in more than 150 years. The team from Moody Nolan will lead the design efforts to create a state-of-the-art, modern hospital to meet the needs of the community.

Norton Healthcare has partnered with Goodwill Industries of Kentucky to invest $100 million in West Louisville, with the hospital being a part of a larger Opportunity Campus at 28th Street and Broadway. Comprehensive services at the hospital will include adult and pediatric primary care provider offices, an emergency room, inpatient care and outpatient functions. Imaging services, including X-rays and CT scans, will be available, along with specialty care including women’s health, cardiology, neurology and endocrinology.

The new Norton Healthcare hospital will create approximately 100 new jobs in the area and is slated to open in 2024.

Moody Nolan is based in Columbus, Ohio, and is the nation’s largest African American-owned and managed design firm. The firm received the 2021 AIA Architecture Firm Award, the highest honor given by the American Institute of Architects, for at least 10 years of distinguished architecture.

The group has already been involved with a major development in the Louisville community with their recent design of the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center at 30th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard. The center is a part of the Louisville Urban League Sports and Learning Complex, which opened in February 2021.

With a keen focus on highlighting neighborhoods and elevating communities, Moody Nolan has a passion for improving health care for all people and bringing diverse perspectives to the design process.

“We understand the significance of having access to care, and we are honored to be a part of this historic moment for West Louisville,” said Jonathan Moody, AIA, NOMA, president and CEO, Moody Nolan. “It is our core belief that great design is a product of innovative and creative ideas generated by diverse voices that allow us a unique view of projects. By listening to the needs of residents, we embark on projects with a community-first approach.”

Louisville architect Carey Anderson, the first African American architect licensed in Kentucky, will be part of the team working on the project. He was involved in the design of the Institute for Health Equity, a part of Norton Healthcare, as well as the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.

BCCLT, which has an office in Louisville, will serve as the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers. They most recently were involved in projects to renovate part of the Norton Healthcare Pavilion and the “Just for Kids” Critical Care Center at Norton Children’s Hospital.

KPFF Consulting Engineers will be the structural engineering company and will work with HDDS, a West Louisville minority business enterprise firm, for drafting and modeling. KPFF has funded a training program through OneWest to increase the number of minorities in the architecture, engineering and construction industries.

A general contractor for the project will be announced at a later time. To follow progress and updates on the new hospital, go to WestLouisvilleHospital.org. Community members will be able to provide feedback on the website.
