Prichard Committee names six members, one board member

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky community and business leaders are among six new members and one new board member elected to The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence by its membership during the annual business meeting on Friday, October 28, at Berea College. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, RossTarrant Architects, Thoroughbred, Anthem, and The 305 Education Group provided support for the annual meeting.

Joining the Prichard Committee as new members are:

  • Terence Clemons, Fayette County
  • Dr. Sandi Curd, Whitley County
  • Gayle Hilleke, Campbell County
  • Laurel Raimondo Martin, Fayette County
  • Haley McCoy, Madison County
  • Jennifer Washburn, Marshall County

Dr. Felicia Cumings Smith of Frankfort, President & CEO of the National Center for Families Learning, is Joining the board of directors.

Recognizing Kentuckians in various spaces of influence, The Prichard Committee recognized the following with Awards of Excellence for their positive impact on continuous improvement in education:

  • John and Jean Rosenberg, Floyd County, Prestonsburg, KY
  • Family Resource and Youth Services Centers, accepted by Melissa Goins, Director
  • Senator Stephen West, Paris
  • Representative James Tipton, Taylorsville

The Family Resource and Youth Service Centers (FRYSC) were established as a component of the historic Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) of 1990. These school-based centers aim to help academically at-risk students succeed in school by helping to minimize or eliminate non-cognitive barriers to learning.

Senator Stephen West and Representative James Tipton were also recognized for being education champions in the Kentucky General Assembly.  Senator West and Representative Tipton’s successful passage of Kentucky Read to Succeed Act in the 2022 Kentucky Legislative Session ensures that more young children across the commonwealth will gain access to strengthened quality instruction in reading.
