KY 237 Camp Ernst Road widening project in Boone County begins

$24 million project will continue mission of a safer corridor

COVINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 4, 2013) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has begun utility work on KY 237 Camp Ernst Road in Boone County to make way for the next section of the widening and realignment project. Construction work will follow this spring.

This project will reconstruct a 1.35-mile section of Camp Ernst Road (KY 237) from Rogers Lane to Burlington Pike (KY 18). L-M Asphalt Partners LTD of Lexington was awarded the project with its low bid of $22.4 million.

“We are excited to begin construction on the second section of KY 237,” said Rob Hans, Chief District Engineer for KYTC District 6. “The project’s biggest focus will be the Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) at the Camp Ernst Road and KY 18 intersection; which is the first one constructed in our northern Kentucky district.”

SPUI is an interchange where the arterial and ramp entrances and exits are controlled by a single traffic signal. More than 40,000 cars travel through the KY 237/KY 18 intersection daily. Traffic flow under the SPUI system will be uninterrupted with the construction of a bridge over KY 18, which is scheduled to begin this spring.  Other improvements will be to expand the current two lanes to five lanes with a center turning lane and to add curb, gutter and 10-foot multi-use paths on each side of the new roadway.  The project will omit dangerous curves and grades providing a safer road for bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. There will also be deceleration lanes into major subdivisions.

The first section, KY 237 (Pleasant Valley Road), was completed in December 2012.  That $9.2 million 1.7-mile project improved the Gunpowder/Pleasant Valley Road (KY 237)/U.S. 42 intersection and realigned and widened Pleasant Valley Road.

The remaining section, which is not yet funded, will tie both projects together, connecting Rose Petal to Rogers, to complete the new 4.7 mile KY 237 corridor.

District 6 encourages motorists and residents who use this roadway to check the District 6 Road Report updates online at http://transportation.ky.gov/district-6/Pages/default.aspx. Knowing construction updates ahead of time can minimize frustration and delays.

The anticipated completion date of KY 237 (Camp Ernst Road) project is summer 2015.
