LG&E, KU pledge more than $1.6 million to area nonprofits

Employees’ donations hit 9-year high; 27 charities receive funding for 2014

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 4, 2013) — The annual giving campaign of Louisville Gas and Electric Co. and Kentucky Utilities Co., called the Power of One, has pledged more than $1.6 million, marking the seventh consecutive year employee donations have topped $1 million and raising more than $14 million since the combined campaign’s inception nine years ago.

lge-kuCoupled with financial support from the LG&E and KU Foundation, the funding raised during the 2013 Power of One campaign will be allocated to more than 27 nonprofit organizations across the service territories to support much-needed programs and services in 2014.

Louisville-based nonprofit organizations Fund for the Arts, Metro United Way and WHAS Crusade for Children — as well as United Ways across the KU service territory from Barlow, Ky. to Norton, Va. — will receive funding through the Power of One campaign.

“Every year, we are amazed by our employees who rally behind their communities by giving their time, donating resources and pledging funds to local charitable organizations. We are grateful for our employees’ generous support during our annual Power of One campaign,” said Laura Douglas, vice president of Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs for LG&E and KU, and co-chair of the 2013 Power of One campaign.

“In fact, our employees pledged the highest amount ever in the history of our nine-year campaign,” Douglas said. “Giving back is not just something we do – it’s who we are.”

Nearly 70 percent of LG&E and KU employees participate in the companies’ annual giving campaign through payroll deduction, more than twice the national average for employee participation in charitable giving.
