Humana appoints Thomas J. Liston as president of retail segment

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 14, 2012) BUSINESS WIRE — Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced that Thomas J. Liston, the company’s Senior Vice President of Senior Products, has been promoted to the new role of President, Retail Segment for Humana. In this role, Liston will lead Humana’s growing retail businesses including Senior Products (which covers all Medicare products sold to individuals); HumanaOne plans for individuals and families; and Retail Sales, which includes a broad portfolio of health, wellness and financial protection products distributed by Humana’s MarketPOINT organization.

Before today’s announcement, Liston has – since 2008 – led Humana’s Senior Products area, including Medicare Advantage plans, special-needs plans, stand-alone prescription drug plans and Medicare supplement products. In 2011, Humana realigned around specific customer relationships: Retail, Employer Group, Health & Well-Being Services, and Government & Other Businesses.

“By organizing around the customers we serve, we are better positioned to bring together all of Humana’s capabilities, products and services to meet the specific needs of each group and execute our strategy,” said James E. Murray, Humana’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Tom has been instrumental in leading Humana’s Senior Products business and is the ideal candidate to lead our growing Retail segment.” Liston will continue reporting to Murray.

Since joining Humana in the mid-1990s, Liston has held a series of progressively responsible leadership positions. Before he assumed leadership of Senior Products, Liston led the Strategy and Corporate Development area of the company. In that role, he directed Humana’s mergers and acquisitions and venture capital activities. He also served in a variety of financial roles including corporate controller. Prior to joining Humana, he was a CPA and partner with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers).

Liston has served on the boards of directors of several venture portfolio companies and nonprofit organizations. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Kentucky in 1983.

Timothy A. (Alan) Wheatley, a 20-year Humana veteran, will assume leadership of Humana’s Medicare business, reporting to Liston. During his Humana career, Wheatley has served in key leadership roles, including the past eight years as a leader on the company’s Senior Products team. He has helped Humana grow its Medicare enrollment while leading key initiatives such as the 2006 Medicare expansion and Humana’s Medicare prescription-drug plan partnership with Walmart.

Wheatley serves on the boards of multiple nonprofit organizations and was board chairman for the 2007 Senior Olympic Games. Wheatley received a bachelor’s degree, with a major in finance, from the University of Kentucky in 1991; he earned a master’s of business administration degree from the University of Louisville in 1998.
