Auditor to host Good Government Summit in Louisville

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 26, 2014) —Auditor Adam Edelen will host a Good Government Summit on March 11 in Louisville to strengthen accountability and transparency in school districts and local governments.

Public officials representing schools, cities, counties and special districts are invited to attend the free program from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Jefferson Community and Technical College Southwest Campus in Louisville. It has been approved by the Department for Local Government as applicable credit for individuals enrolled in the County Officials Training Program.

The inaugural Good Government Summit held last October in Northern Kentucky received high marks from some of the 200-plus attendees. Public officials across the commonwealth urged Edelen to bring the program to their regions.

“Recent scandals have focused the public’s attention on the bad apples, but the strong turnout at the inaugural Good Government Summit demonstrated that the majority of public servants want to do the right thing,” Edelen said.

He will be joined by representatives of the auditor’s office who will talk about governance for councils, commissions and boards; policies for sound financial management and preparing for audits.

Dayton Independent Schools Superintendent Jay Brewer will talk about weathering fraud. Brewer has led the small school district’s efforts to recover after the former superintendent received more than $200,000 in unauthorized payments.

An FBI agent based in Louisville will lead a discussion about cyber security and the steps local governments can take to protect themselves from cyber attacks.

The Auditor’s office in recent years has conducted special examinations into state agencies, cities, school districts and special districts that have identified serious abuses of taxpayer dollars.

“These incidents can and have happened all across the commonwealth,” Edelen said. “I am bringing together experts on governance, accounting and public corruption to give public officials the tools they need to run local governments honestly and efficiently.”

No RSVP is required. However, for planning purposes, email: [email protected] to provide a count of individuals planning to attend.
