Newspaper reports: Breeders’ Cup coming to Keeneland in 2015

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 17, 2014) — The Courier-Journal is reporting that the Breeders’ Cup World Championships is coming to the Keeneland Race Course in 2015.

The newspaper cites two sources with “knowledge of the plans.” The race, which was at Santa Anita this year, would take place in Lexington in 2015, return to Santa Anita in 2016 then on to Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in San Diego in 2017, the Courier-Journal said.

Keeneland is converting its main race track from a synthetic Polytrack material to a state-of-the-art dirt surface, with a drainage system that will be the first of its kind in North America. News reports say the Breeders' Cup will be hosted there in 2015.

The Breeders’ Cup previously has been held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, but the venue was passed up this year for Santa Anita. (See related story.)

An official announcement from Breeders’ Cup is expected later this month.

This year’s race, the 31st running of the Breeders’ Cup, is Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1 at Santa Anita. This will be the eighth time that Santa Anita will host the Breeders’ Cup.
