Centre College awarded $200,000 grant for first-generation students

Funds will help enrich experience for the school’s more than 130 first-generation students

DANVILLE, Ky. (June 26, 2014) —
The Arthur Vining Davis Foundation has awarded Centre College a $200,000 grant to support initiatives that enrich the experience of the College’s first-generation college students. Centre has more than 130 first-generation students currently enrolled at the college.

Associate Dean Sarah Scott Hall has been appointed to lead Centre’s efforts in designing first-generation programing and to direct the Grissom Scholars Program that will launch in the fall of 2015.

“Having seen the transformative effect a college education had for my father, who was a first-generation student, I know personally how such an opportunity touches successive generations,” Hall said.

A 13-year veteran of Centre’s Student Life Office, Hall will continue to develop leadership training opportunities to support and challenge all students in ways that will help them be successful at Centre and beyond.

The three-year grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations will support Hall’s first-generation programing generally and the unique orientation, enrichment and mentoring that will be made available to the 10 recipients of the Grissom scholarships starting in 2015.
