Anthem will replace Humana as plan administrator for retired state employees

FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 16, 2014) — The Kentucky Department for Employee Insurance recently announced that Anthem will replace Humana as plan administrator for Plan Year 2015. Kentucky Retirement Systems provides access to group health insurance coverage through the Kentucky Employees Health Plan (KEP) for recipients until they reach age 65 and/or become eligible for Medicare. After a retired member becomes eligible for Medicare, coverage is available through a Medicare eligible plan offered by KRS.

Retired members not eligible for Medicare

Coverage is provided through the Kentucky Employees Health Plan (KEHP), and the administrator for Plan Year 2015 will the Anthem.  KEHP is a self-insured health plan—meaning the KEHP determines benefit plan designs, not a third party insurance company.  A third party insurance company does however contract with the KEHP to administer the medical plans. For example, they process claims and maintain a medical network.

See KEHP FAQs for more information.  As KRS receives updates, it will post this information under the Insurance section on its website.

Retired members eligible for Medicare

For retired members who are eligible for Medicare, the plan administrator will not change. KRS will continue to partner with Humana to provide coverage for members who are eligible for Medicare. KRS expects a passive enrollment period in Fall 2014. Members should still read all enrollment materials thoroughly to be sure they have selected the plan that best fits their needs.

Insurance benefits

KRS will host a series of insurance informational webinars during October.  As soon as the schedule is available, it will be posted on the KRS website and Facebook page.
