XPO Logistics opens transportation logistics center in Northern Kentucky

NEWPORT, Ky. (Sept. 15, 2014) – XPO Logistics Inc.’s opened a new transportation logistics center in Newport on Monday.

One of North America’s largest providers of third-party logistics services for domestic and international freight, XPO Logistics is expected to create up to 88 full-time jobs and invest up to $2.7 million in Kentucky. The company will operate inside a 14,000-s.f. facility on Dave Cowens Drive.

“We congratulate XPO Logistics on its success and growth in Newport,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “Northern Kentucky continues to be an ideal place for companies to base their services to domestic and global markets. We’re glad that XPO Logistics is growing, creating new jobs and investing in the Commonwealth.”

Tracing its roots back to 1989, XPO Logistics holds leading positions in some of the fastest-growing areas of transportation logistics. The company offers truckload and less-than-truckload brokerage, last mile logistics, intermodal services, ground/air expedited transportation, premium contract logistics, freight forwarding services and managed transportation to more than 14,000 customers in the manufacturing, industrial, retail, commercial, life sciences and governmental sectors. XPO Logistics has operations in more than 200 locations in the United States and Canada, including a freight brokerage office in Louisville that employs 23 people.

“Our Newport facility expands our presence in Kentucky with another large facility focused on serving our customers across North America,” said Troy Cooper, chief operating officer of XPO Logistics. “We’re extremely pleased that the state has been so supportive of our plans to grow our workforce in Kentucky with the creation of up to 88 new full-time jobs. We plan to start recruiting immediately for inside sales positions.”

Kentucky is one of the nation’s top logistics hubs. Located at the center of a 34-state area in the eastern United States, the state’s location advantage facilitates the distribution of goods and materials to a massive industrial and consumer market. The commonwealth’s borders are within a day’s drive of over 65 percent of the nation’s population, personal income and manufacturing establishments.

To encourage the investment and job growth in Newport, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved the company for tax incentives up to $1.5 million through the Kentucky Business Investment program. The performance-based incentive allows a company to keep a portion of its investment over the term of the agreement through corporate income tax credits and wage assessments by meeting job and investment targets.

“Kentucky is pleased to welcome XPO Logistics’ newest location to our successful domestic and international transportation industry,” said state Sen. Katie Stine, of Southgate. “Not only is Kentucky ideally located for these essential services, but in northern Kentucky we have a well-educated, motivated workforce to support the 88 full-time jobs and any future growth that XPO Logistics will require.”

“Our region of the state has long played a major role when it comes to helping companies get their products in the hands of their customers, so XPO Logistics’ new facility is a great addition to that specialized industry,” said Rep. Dennis Keene, of Wilder. “I want to thank its leaders for making this investment, and I appreciate the hard work of our local and state economic development officials who helped to make this a reality. These jobs come at a great time.”

“Northern Kentucky is well-positioned for continued office and logistics industry growth,” said Steve Pendery, Northern Kentucky Tri-ED Board Member and Campbell County Judge-Executive. “With the addition of their new logistics center, we’re proud to welcome XPO to the network of successful businesses in Campbell County.”

“Newport is thrilled to welcome XPO Logistics to northern Kentucky,” said Newport City Manager Tom Fromme. “The new jobs the company is bringing will add to the business and residential economic development resurgence that Newport is experiencing.”
