SOAR receives $750,000 start-up grant from Appalachian Regional Commission

Grant will help hire staff, including executive director

SOAR_Kentucky_logoSLADE, Ky. (Sept. 23, 2014) — The Appalachian Regional Commission awarded the Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) initiative a $750,000 grant to cover start-up expenses over the next four years. The funds will cover up to half of the expected administrative expenses, including the salary of a qualified executive director and appropriate administrative costs.

SOAR aims to look for ways to improve the economy in Eastern Kentucky.

“We appreciate this commitment of federal resources from ARC, because it shows that they are also committed to the mission of SOAR,” said Gov. Steve Beshear, who launched SOAR along with Rep. Hal Rogers. “We share their belief that this initiative has great potential for the future of Appalachia.”

The second annual SOAR Summit will be held sometime in early 2015.
