First reported mine casualty in Kentucky in 2014

kentucky_seal_resizedFRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 8, 2014) — The year’s first fatality of a coal miner in Kentucky was reported last night following an accident at the Tinsley Branch Mine in Bell County, said Kentucky Division of Mine Safety officials.

The miner, Justin M. Mize, 31, was a resident of Harrogate, Tenn.

Preliminary information from the Division of Mine Safety indicates that a right-side highwall miner cutter chain broke within a 68-foot-deep hole. Mize was attempting to retrieve the chain when he was struck by a rock. The incident is under investigation.
