“The State Treasurer serves as a member of the board of directors for the Kentucky Teachers’ Retirement System, overseeing the pensions and savings of our teachers, which I believe is one of the most important functions of this office,” Nelson said.

“I’ve served as the chair of the House Labor and Industry Committee for five years and many issues we’ve addressed — labor, unions, collective bargaining, and workplace safety — give me a solid foundation to tackle the responsibilities of State Treasurer,” he said.

The Treasurer also serves as vice chairman of the State Investment Commission; a member of the Kentucky Lottery Board which ensures proper oversight of the KEES program, and; administers the state’s unclaimed property fund program.

Nelson is a retired teacher who spent 30 years in the Bell County school district. He has been married to Inetta Nelson for 38 years and they have one daughter, Katie.
