I-65 North traffic to be moved to a new roadway tonight

Overnight lane and ramp closures begin at 7 p.m.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 18, 2014) — Traffic on I-65 North will be shifting to newly constructed roadway during the overnight hours. The new lanes extend from Muhammad Ali Boulevard to Witherspoon Street.

i-65 trafficI-65 North will be reduced to one lane along this nearly one-mile stretch to prepare for the traffic shift. The ramp from I-65 North to I-64 West will be closed. The ramp from Liberty Street/Muhammad Ali Boulevard to I-65 North will also be closed. The lane reduction and ramp closures are scheduled to begin around 7 p.m. and end by 6 a.m.

In their final configuration, the new lanes that have been under construction since this summer will carry I-65 South traffic. For now, I-65 North traffic is being shifted to the new pavement. This will allow crews with Walsh Construction to build new lanes of I-65 North to connect with the new Ohio River bridge under construction.

I-65 South traffic will continue to travel on the new roadway it shifted to in early May. These lanes run parallel to I-65 South and will serve as the new I-65 South collector-distributor when the project is complete.

The new river crossing is scheduled to open to two-way traffic in April 2016. The Downtown Crossing is scheduled to be complete in December 2016.
