Weekend bridge closures: New ramp to open, old to be demolished in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 7, 2015) — Drivers in Downtown Louisville who are traveling from I-65 North to I-64 East or I-71 North will notice a slight change in their normal route starting early Friday morning. A newly-constructed ramp from I-65 North to I-64 East/I-71 north is scheduled to open to traffic during the overnight hours on Thursday, May 7.

Drivers will need to be prepared for an earlier decision point. The on-ramp from I-65 North to I-64 East/I-71 North had been located north of Main Street. The new ramp will be south of Main Street. Signage will be in place, clearly marking the new ramp. The new ramp is part of the Downtown Crossing portion of the Ohio River Bridges Project. More than 40 new ramps and overpasses are being built on the Kentucky side of the river as the Kennedy Interchange is rebuilt, untangling many of the weaves of “Spaghetti Junction.”
Weekend Closures
Crews will begin demolition of the old ramp this weekend, leading to the overnight closure of a Downtown ramp and a small section of I-64 East.
The ramp from River Road and 2nd Street to I-64 East/I-71 North and I-64 East between 2nd Street and I-65 are scheduled to close overnight Saturday, May 9. The overnight closures are scheduled to begin around 9 p.m. and end around 7 a.m. Sunday. Signed detours will be in place, with most traffic diverted to I-264 (Watterson Expressway).
