Lawsuit over Maker’s Mark “handmade” claim dismissed

San Diego – A judge in a San Diego federal court has dismissed a lawsuit claiming the “handmade” label on Maker’s Mark bottles were misleading to consumers.

In the ruling, U.S. District Judge John A. Houston said “handmade cannot reasonably be interpreted as meaning literally by hand nor that a reasonable consumer would understand the term to mean no equipment or automated process was used to manufacture the whiskey.”

In the case, the plaintiffs claimed they paid more for the bourbon whiskey because of its handmade quality, however the lawsuit claimed the liquor is made with minimal supervision while the company’s website illustrates a mechanized process.
