Kentucky Arts Council awards six TranspARTation Grants to two schools

Provides funds for arts-related field trips

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 4, 2015) — The Kentucky Arts Council has awarded six grants to two Kentucky schools to pay for transportation to and from arts-related field trips for students through the popular TranspARTation Grant.

artsThe TranspARTation Grant is awarded three times per year by the arts council. The program is now in its third year. Grants are based on the round trip mileage from the school building to the arts organization or performance venue and the number of buses necessary. This round of grant funding is for trips scheduled between Oct. 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016.

“Transportation costs are sometimes a barrier to children experiencing the arts,” said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director. “Our TranspARTation Grants help eliminate this barrier and allow teachers to focus on creating a lesson around the arts field trip rather than worry about how to pay for getting the students to the venue.”

Schools that received grants and the arts organizations they will visit are:

  • Clarkson Elementary School in Grayson County to see “Peter Rabbit” ($272), “Musical Chicken Dance” ($544), “The Lightning Thief” ($1,632), “Junie B. Jones, Essential Survival Guide to School” ($1,632) and “The Berenstain Bears Live! Family Matters the Musical” ($816), all at the RiverPark Center.
  • Jesse Clark Middle School in Fayette County to see the play “Dracula” at Actors Theatre ($2,432).

Any Kentucky public or private school that supports grades pre-K through 12 may apply for a TranspARTation Grant. There are three application periods per year of TranspARTation funding. The next deadline is Aug. 17 for field trips taken Oct. 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016. The third round deadline is Nov. 16 for field trips taken Jan. 1 – June 30, 2016.

Schools receiving TranspARTation Grants must attend arts events presented by one of many preapproved TranspARTation organizations.
