NKU launches new economic comparison website

Highland Heights, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University has launched a new website aimed at expanding access to economic data for communities across Kentucky.

The site, Bluegrass By The Numbers, is the first time that up-to-date economic data from a variety of sources has been aggregated in one place. Free tools also allow local officials to measure how their communities perform against others across Kentucky and the nation.

Bluegrass By The Numbers is a free service provided by NKU’s Center for Economic Analysis and Development (CEAD), an initiative of the Haile/US Bank College of Business.

“This new public service will enable communities across Kentucky to measure the performance of their economies and allow them to benchmark against others,” said CEAD Director Janet Harrah. “We aim to provide meaningful data that can help propel the economies of communities across our Commonwealth.”

Major data sets include: employment by industry and occupation; labor force status, including unemployment rates; personal income statistics; and demographic trends.

CEAD will aggregate the federal labor data and make it available by Area Development District, Metropolitan Statistical Area and, in some cases, by city and county.

The student-led project is supervised by Harrah, a member of the state’s Consensus Forecasting Group.

The data are available online at bluegrassbythenumbers.nku.edu and via downloadable Excel-based tools. Regular reports are also available via email.

Bluegrass By The Numbers is modeled on the successful “Northern Kentucky by the Numbers,” a CEAD initiative that provides similar data for the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati region and regular reports on the region’s economic climate.
