Louisville group wants to build largest disco ball in the world

Getting the ball rolling with first fundraiser this weekend

Louisville, Ky. – Known for its bourbon and as Derby City, Louisville could also be considered the “disco ball capital of the world,” given nearly all of the glassy ornaments in the world are produced by Omega National Products.

However, Louisville is not the home city for the largest disco ball, which resides in revelry on the Isle of Wight in England. At 33 ft. in diameter, it is Guiness World Record-certified.

But a group of concerned citizens in Louisville, as a point of civc pride, want to change that.

World’s Largest Disco Ball, Y’all wants to create a 67 ft. disco ball that “will exemplify the energy, innovation, passion, and wonderful weirdness that we know exists in our great city,” according to the group’s website.

The flashy orb would then be bequeathed to the city of Louisville, where would find a permanent position or even temporary displays for popular events, such as Forecastle.

To get the ball rolling, literally, the group will be hosting their first fundraiser this weekend. Beginning at 8 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Headliners Music Hall, Tony and the Tanlines will be playing, naturally, the best disco hits of the ’70s and ’80s. Tickets are $10.
