$281 million in investments at CVG over last 7 years
Erlanger, Ky. – Governor Steve Beshear today joined DHL Express company officials to celebrate nearly a decade of investments at its Americas hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).
The numbers add up to seven years, 2,400 employees, 50 million international shipments annually and investments totaling $281 million.
DHL, a leading global logistics company, invited state and local leaders to celebrate recent growth at CVG. Earlier this year, DHL Express announced plans to invest $108 million to expand its hub at CVG, including new aircraft gates, further automation and storage warehouse space.

Beshear. “DHL has been a great corporate citizen, investing $281 million in the Commonwealth and providing an increasing number of jobs to families in northern Kentucky. DHL’s operations are a key piece of Kentucky’s logistics advantage that allows companies of all sizes to easily grow and expand domestically and internationally. We look forward to a long, rewarding partnership with DHL and CVG.”
In 2009, DHL established its principal Americas air hub at CVG and has continued to grow nearly every year since, investing $281 million. Completed projects have included:
- July 2009 – Invested $19 million to refurbish the CVG hub and relocate operations.
- February 2011 – Invested $12 million to upgrade technology at air hub.
- November 2011 – Invested $22 million to expand aircraft parking, including nine new wide-body aircraft gates.
- July 2012 – Invested $6 million to add new ground support equipment and an employee parking lot.
- June 2013 – Invested $46 million for a ramp extension, pilot building, IT upgrades and 180,000-square-foot sort building. Added 120 new jobs.
- March 2015 – Invested $21.4 million in hub automation equipment.
- Fall 2015 – Investing $47 million to install small package/letter sort automation equipment. Will add up to 100 new jobs after the project is complete.
- Winter 2016 – Investing $108 million to expand the existing warehouse, increase the number of aircraft gates and add sorting and aviation equipment. DHL will add up to 40 new jobs when the project is complete.
The DHL Express global hub sits at the heart of the DHL U.S. network, with flights connecting customers from more than 220 countries and territories worldwide to every corner of the United States. In addition to global hubs in Hong Kong and Germany, the CVG hub completes the backbone of the DHL intercontinental network. Processing approximately 50 million international shipments annually, the CVG hub handles shipments bound for the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Latin America.

With 2,400 employees in northern Kentucky, DHL is part of Deutsche Post DHL, headquartered in Bonn, Germany. The company has also worked closely with the Cabinet for Economic Development’s European Representative Office in Hamburg, Germany. Kentucky is home to 64 German-owned facilities that employ nearly 10,000 people.

The recent $108 million announcement is truly fantastic and will continue DHL’s ability to assist northern Kentucky to attract new employers and jobs to the region.
